ICYMI from the Marietta Daily Journal: Ossoff, Warnock, Loudermilk Launch Inquiry into Marietta Postal Theft

Senator Reverend Warnock has long track record working to strengthen USPS efficiency, accountability

Marietta, GA – Today, U.S. Senators Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Jon Ossoff (D-GA), and Representative Barry Loudermilk (R-GA-11) launched a bipartisan, bicameral inquiry with the United States Postal Service (USPS) and asked Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to provide a detailed explanation for alleged fraud at the Marietta Post Office last year.

According to the Marietta Daily Journal, alleged crimes committed at the post office include mail theft, forgery, document fraud, and check-washing.

“We write to express concern regarding the recent string of incidents committed at the Marietta Post Office. In December 2023, the Marietta Daily Journal reported that a series of crimes occurred at this post office, including mail theft, forgery, document fraud, and check-washing. Reports of missing tax returns and pension checks are troubling, as many of our Georgia constituents rely on these checks for living expenses,” said Senator Reverend Warnock and lawmakers.

Senators Reverend Warnock and Ossoff, as well as Representative Loudermilk are requesting answers to the following questions from Postmaster General DeJoy:

  1. What update can you provide regarding the aforementioned incidents at the Marietta Post Office?
  2. What information can you provide about the full extent of the alleged crimes committed?
  3. Is the Office of the Inspector General currently conducting an investigation into these alleged incidents? If so, how long is this investigation expected to last?
  4. How is USPS currently communicating with victims about their concerns?
  5. What resources are being made available to victims of these crimes?
  6. What steps, if any, are being taken towards restitution for the victims?

This is the latest of Senator Warnock’s efforts to hold USPS accountable and improve postal service for Georgians. In March 2022, Senator Warnock helped pass the Postal Service Reform Act, signed into law by President Bident, to help increase postal service efficiency and accountability. In August 2022, Senators Warnock and Ossoff launched an inquiry pushing Postmaster General DeJoy to address the unsatisfactory conditions at a United States Post Office building in Greensboro, Georgia, and the following month, Senator Warnock urged USPS to investing check washing in Dunwoody being facilitated through the postal mail.

Dear Postmaster General DeJoy,

We write to express concern regarding the recent string of incidents committed at the Marietta Post Office, located at 257 Lawrence St NE, Marietta, GA, 30060. In December 2023, the Marietta Daily Journal reported that a series of crimes occurred at this post office, including mail theft, forgery, document fraud, and check-washing. Reports of missing tax returns and pension checks are troubling, as many of our Georgia constituents rely on these checks for living expenses.

Through an inquiry to the Post Office, the Journal learned that the alleged perpetrator was a USPS employee, but no longer employed by the Post Office. However, we remain concerned about these alleged crimes and about the lack of communication with affected constituents. For example, one constituent reported to the Journal that, when filing a report with the Cobb County Police department, he was told that a federal investigation would be required. However, it is unclear whether there is any type of ongoing investigation and whether affected constituents will receive restitution.

Accordingly, we request answers to the following questions:

We look forward to a timely response.
