Senators Reverend Warnock, Hyde-Smith Introduce Bipartisan Legislation to Honor Gold Star Families

Bipartisan Gold Star Families Remembrance Week resolution sets Sept. 19-25 to honor families of the fallen
Senator Warnock: “Our nation is forever indebted to the brave men and women who laid it all on the line for our country, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms.  And for that, their families—who also sacrificed immensely—deserve recognition and our steadfast support as they work to navigate life without their loved one”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) and U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) introduced a resolution to establish a national period to honor the sacrifices made by families of U.S. military servicemembers who lost their lives in service to the nation.

The bipartisan resolution designates September 19-25, 2021, as Gold Star Families Remembrance Week.

“Our nation is forever indebted to the brave men and women who laid it all on the line for our country, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms.  And for that, their families—who also sacrificed immensely—deserve recognition and our steadfast support as they work to navigate life without their loved one,” said Senator Reverend Warnock. “Our military has a strong and proud footprint in my home state of Georgia, and as a voice for our state in the Senate, I am proud to introduce this resolution with Senator Hyde-Smith to recognize Gold Star Families Remembrance Week and to remind every American of our solemn duty to honor and support the families of the servicemembers who sacrificed everything to keep our nation safe.”

“Just as we owe an enormous debt to every servicemember who lost their life defending our nation, we also owe tribute to the families who share in that sacrifice. They bear the heavy weight of grief and deserve to be honored. With this bipartisan resolution, we recognize these families and their solemn contributions to the defense of our nation,” said Senator Hyde-Smith.

The Gold Star Families Remembrance Week resolution recognizes the loss and sacrifices of families in support of fallen member of the Armed Forces, as well as veterans. It encourages Americans to perform acts of community service and good will to honor these families.

Commemoration of Gold Star Families Remembrance Week serves as a prelude to Gold Star Mother’s Day, which has been observed by presidential proclamation since 1936 on the last Sunday of September.

Until passage of Hyde-Smith’s 2018 resolution, there was no formal recognition on a national level of the sacrifices made by families of the fallen.
