Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) issued the following statement ahead of the 20th Anniversary of 9/11:
“Twenty years ago, nearly 3,000 Americans lost their lives in a series of horrific attacks on American soil. Twenty years later, on the anniversary of 9/11, I join the nation in prayer as we pause to remember and mourn the lives taken, the heroes who sacrificed themselves to save others and our country, and to pray for the parents, partners, children and friends whose last 20 years have been marked by a profound absence.
“On this somber anniversary, we also pause in gratitude for the men and women who went on to serve our country in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the over 7,000 Americans who did not make it home, including 218 Georgians. Our nation is forever indebted to all those who served and sacrificed—in recent weeks to bring others to safety, and over the last twenty years. We must match the pride we have for our men and women in uniform with a commitment to ensuring they and their families have the support they need and have earned.
“As we continue to heal from these devastating attacks and tend to the painful wounds and memories reopened on this significant anniversary, it is our duty as a people to continue reaching for our nation’s highest ideals.”
