Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) issued the following statement following the Biden administration’s announcement of a plan to close Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, GA as soon as possible.
“The imminent closure of Irwin County Detention Center is long overdue. This is a victory for the activists, organizers, Georgia community leaders and elected officials who worked tirelessly to put a stop to human rights violations happening right in our state in Ocilla, GA. This announcement is another step towards ensuring Georgia workers and vulnerable women are not placed in harm’s way, and another step towards ending the use of private prisons in our state for good.”
Last year, Senator Warnock called for the closure of Irwin County Detention Center and condemned the inhumane medical procedures performed on women being detained there, oftentimes without their consent or knowledge. Senator Warnock remains a vocal champion for immigration reform.
