Senator Warnock on Short Term Funding Bill: “I’m supporting this short term government funding bill to get Georgia’s farmers and families the urgent assistance they need”

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) voted to pass a short-term government funding bill that will keep the federal government open and deliver significant investments and resources to Georgians, especially the state’s rural communities that are still reeling following Hurricane Helene. The stopgap spending bill will fund the federal government through March 14. Following Senator Warnock’s persistent efforts, the legislation includes $100 billion in disaster assistance for Georgians and Americans recovering from Hurricane Helene and other recent natural disasters, as well as tens of millions in additional assistance for Georgia commodity farmers.

“Washington Republicans almost shut the government down for no good reason,” said Senator Reverend Warnock. “I’m glad our Republican colleagues in the House stopped playing partisan games and allowed Congress to finally do our job to keep the government open, but this is no way to run a country. This type of political brinksmanship that centers politicians and not the people is exactly what’s wrong with Washington and why Americans are losing trust in our government. I’m not going to stand by while craven politicians acting in bad faith try to take advantage of the hardworking people of our state. I’m supporting this short term government funding bill to get Georgia’s farmers and families the urgent assistance they need.”

Disaster Relief

Thanks to Senator Warnock’s months-long effort, including organizing nearly the entire Georgia delegation and Republican Senators to pressure key Republican leaders, the stop-gap funding includes robust disaster assistance for Georgia families and farmers who were devastated by Hurricane Helene. This is especially critical for pecan, cotton, poultry, and timber industries. Senator Warnock held clinics throughout impacted areas to connect Georgians with federal disaster relief and spoke on the Senate floor in support of urgently needed assistance.

Economic Assistance for Farmers

Senator Warnock, a member of the U.S. Senate Agriculture committee, secured $10 billion in economic assistance for commodity farmers, including cotton and peanuts farmers, who’ve been struggling to keep their heads above water dealing with the consequences of inflation as Congress continues to stall on negotiating a long-overdue Farm Bill. Georgia farmers are expected to see tens of millions in relief.
