U.S. Senate Committee on Finance handles federal tax, health care and trade policy
Committee’s jurisdiction includes Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, ACA tax credits, tariffs and the IRS
Senate Finance committee will be ground-zero for upcoming legislative fights on reinstating the expanded Child Tax Credit, extending Trump tax cuts for the rich, defending against cuts to Social Security and other social safety net programs
Senator Reverend Warnock: “I will be a guardian on the committee against any efforts to gut critical safety net programs like Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare that working people rely on to live in dignity, against expensive tariffs that will hurt Georgians’ pockets and bottom lines, and against any attempts to give massive tax cuts to the top one percent at the expense of working families and our communities”
Senator Reverend Warnock will also continue serving on the Senate Agriculture and Banking committees in the 119th Congress
Senator Reverend Warnock: “I’m also eager to be a practical and pragmatic team player on the committee in its work to support our businesses large and small and bolster the middle class, so I’ll always be looking for opportunities to work across the aisle and advance bipartisan solutions that keep our economy moving forward”
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) issued the following statement after being appointed to the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance for the 119th Congress. The Senate Finance committee has jurisdiction over tax, health care and trade issues and is the premiere Senate panel that handles federal policy related to social safety net programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. The committee also oversees policies dealing with the nation’s revenue, from tariffs and other trade programs to federal income taxes, and health care, including tax credits for health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
“As a pastor I’ve long been working to build an economy that works for everyone, even before I got to the Senate, and I’m excited to bring that fight to the esteemed Senate Finance Committee. I look forward to working with both Ranking Member Wyden and Chairman Crapo to steer Washington toward fiscal policies that center ordinary people, from reinstating the expanded Child Tax Credit that gave a major tax cut to working class families to fighting to close the health care coverage gap in Georgia and the nine other states that still have yet to expand Medicaid,” said Senator Reverend Warnock.
The Senate Finance committee will be ground-zero for expected upcoming legislative battles related to proposed efforts to gut federal social safety net programs, as well as promises to extend tax cuts from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act for billionaires and the wealthiest corporations.
Senator Reverend Warnock continued: “I won’t abandon the values that are important to Georgians. I will be a guardian on the committee against any efforts to gut critical safety net programs like Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare that working people rely on to live in dignity, against expensive tariffs that will hurt Georgians’ pockets and bottom lines, and against any attempts to give massive tax cuts to the top one percent at the expense of working families and our communities. But I’m also eager to be a practical and pragmatic team player on the committee in its work to support our businesses large and small and bolster the middle class, so I’ll always be looking for opportunities to work across the aisle and advance bipartisan solutions that keep our economy moving forward.”
Senator Warnock has long been a champion for many of the issues under the Finance committee’s purview, from his decade-long fight to expand Medicaid in Georgia to his vocal advocacy for the expanded Child Tax Credit. A pro-business Democrat, Senator Warnock has also been a champion in the Senate for tax cuts and credits that support small and large businesses.
