Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Jon Ossoff (D-GA) announced over $38 million in new federal funding for infrastructure upgrades at airports across Georgia. The grants were awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) program and made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The Atlanta airport will receive approximately $30 million for infrastructure upgrades including terminal improvements, taxiway rehabilitation, and expanded apron space–all helping create more efficient operations to promote safe and reliable travel for Georgians and folks passing through the world’s busiest airport.
The latest round of funding made possible by the Senators’ Bipartisan Infrastructure Law demonstrates their support for airports in every corner of Georgia. In addition to the funding grants for Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the Columbus and Athens Airports will each receive over $800,000 to acquire an aircraft rescue and fire fighting vehicle to support operations and promote safety, and the Statesboro-Bulloch County Airport will receive over $800,000 for hangar construction. The combined awards for Georgia total more than $38 million and will support control tower improvements, terminal and taxiway infrastructure upgrades, safety enhancements, and more.
“Georgia is one of the most important aviation states in the nation. That’s why I’ve fought tirelessly to bolster federal support for our airports since I came to the Senate, including in the recently passed FAA reauthorization law I was proud to champion,” said Senator Reverend Warnock. “Senator Ossoff and I are going to keep working to take Georgia’s aviation economy to new heights.”
“Georgia’s airports are a key driver of job creation and economic competitiveness. Alongside Senator Reverend Warnock, I am pleased to announce these new investments in Georgia’s airports through our bipartisan infrastructure law, which will continue to deliver long-overdue upgrades to Georgia’s infrastructure for years to come,” Senator Ossoff said.
A longtime champion for Georgia’s aviation industry, Senator Warnock recently secured provisions in the FAA Reauthorization law that will help transform the aviation industry, including provisions to bolster the aviation workforce pipeline and invest in our aviation economy. Last month, Senator Warnock toured Gulfstream headquarters in Savannah, Georgia, as well as Savannah Tech’s Crossroads Aviation Campus to meet with current students who are training to work at Gulfstream or in Georgia’s aviation economy. Last year, Senator Warnock visited Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport to review progress on federally funded projects, including construction of a security checkpoint expansion. In April 2023, Senator Warnock met with local aviation workers and leaders at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport in Chamblee, Georgia to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing workers on the frontlines of the aviation industry; following his visit, the Senator introduced the AIRWAYS Act to strengthen the aviation workforce by recruiting and training future industry workers from all zip codes. Additionally, in 2022 Senator Warnock secured $13.5 million to update nine airports across Georgia, including Augusta Regional Airport and Columbus Airport. The awards announced today were by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which included roughly $619 million for Georgia’s airports to improve efficiency, upgrade terminals, and more.
