Savannahian Senator Reverend Warnock Celebrates Historic 200th Anniversary of City’s Iconic St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The parade began in 1824 when Irish immigrants marched along the Savannah riverfront to the only Roman Catholic Church in Savannah

Savannah boasts one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the United States

Washington D.C. — Ahead of St. Patrick’s Day, observed on March 17, today U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) commemorated the 200th anniversary of the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day parade, being held on Saturday, March 16. The Senator shared a  video celebrating the historic milestone and congratulated the city on their renowned celebrations. Senator Warnock was born in Savannah and raised in Kayton Homes public housing.

“200 years of the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day parade is incredible,” said Senator Reverend Warnock in the  video.“Today, our celebration is one of the most celebrated and recognized parades in the world. As a Savannahian, I’m proud of our hometown tradition of bringing Georgian’s together to celebrate our rich history and cultural diversity.”

“Our St. Patrick’s Day parade is among the many things that makes our city so special – we are the recipients of the luck of the Irish,”  Senator Reverend Warnock continued.

The history of the parade dates to 1824 when Irish immigrants marched along the Savannah riverfront to the only Roman Catholic church in Savannah at the time. Since then, the parade has been held every year. The holiday celebrations in Savannah are among the largest in the United States.
