86% of Americans support banning stock trading by members of Congress
Senator Reverend Warnock: “When Congress centers people instead of their own pocketbooks, we make better policy. That’s why I’m supporting the Ban Congressional Stock Trading Act to prevent Members of Congress from owning individual stocks so the American people can be sure their interests are being represented”
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) joined Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA) in introducing legislation to ban individual stock trading by members of Congress. The Ban Congressional Stock Trading Act would require all members of Congress, their spouses, and dependent children to place their stocks into a blind trust or divest the holding — ensuring they cannot use inside information to influence their stock trades and make a profit. This legislation builds on Senator Warnock’s previous leadership in the Senate to ban Congressional stock trading as he continues working with a bipartisan group of Senators to build a coalition of lawmakers willing to advance a Congressional stock trading ban.
“When I make decisions in the Senate, I’m guided by what’s best for the people back home in Georgia,” said Senator Reverend Warnock. “When Congress centers people instead of their own pocketbooks, we make better policy. That’s why I’m supporting the Ban Congressional Stock Trading Act to prevent Members of Congress from owning individual stocks so the American people can be sure their interests are being represented.”
The American people overwhelmingly support this policy, with 86% saying they back the measure, including 88% of Democrats, 87% of Republicans, and 81% of Independents. In July, Senator Warnock appeared on CNBC and spoke about the bipartisan work he’s doing to ban Congressional stock trading.
This bill is sponsored by Mark Kelly (D-AZ) and is co-sponsored by Senators Michael Bennet (D-CO), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Brian Schatz (D-HI), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI). Click here to read the Ban Congressional Stock Trading Act.
