“A Doctor’s Office is Too Small for a Woman, Her Doctor, and the United States Government”: Senator Reverend Warnock Introduces Legislation to Restore Georgians’ Right to Abortion Access

The Women’s Health Protection Act would codify Roe v. Wade and restore the nationwide right to an abortion

Senator Reverend Warnock: “I’ve long believed that a doctor’s office is too small for a woman, her doctor, and the United States Government. I’m proud to support the Women’s Health Protection Act to restore the right of women to make the most important health care decisions for themselves.”

Washington D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) joined his colleagues U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and 46 members of the Senate Democratic caucus in introducing the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2023, federal legislation to guarantee access to an abortion and restore the right to comprehensive reproductive health care in Georgia and across the country.

The bill’s introduction follows the Supreme Court’s misguided decision in Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization which repealed Roe v. Wade. In Georgia, women cannot receive an abortion before many women know they’re pregnant. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, only 9% of abortions took place in the state before the six-week mark.

“Last year, SCOTUS took a fundamental health care decision away from millions of women and handed it to politicians,” said Senator Reverend Warnock.“I’ve long believed that a doctor’s office is too small for a woman, her doctor, and the United States Government. I’m proud to support the Women’s Health Protection Actto restore the right of women to make the most important health care decisions for themselves.”

The Women’s Health Protection Act creates federal rights for patients and providers to protect abortion access and creates federal protections against medically unnecessary restrictions that undermine Americans’ access to health care and intrude upon personal decision-making. Senator Warnock is a stalwart champion of protecting a women’s right to choose, including cosponsoring legislation to codify that it is illegal for anti-choice states to limit travel for abortion services, and would empower the Attorney General and impacted individuals to bring civil action against those who restrict a woman’s right to cross state lines to receive legal reproductive care.
