Senator Reverend Warnock’s resolution honoring Gold Star Families Remembrance Week was co-led by U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS)

Senator Reverend Warnock: “Our nation is forever indebted to the brave men and women who laid it all on the line for our country, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms.  And for that, their families—who also sacrificed immensely—deserve recognition and our steadfast support as they work to navigate life without their loved one”

Washington, D.C. – Ahead of next week’s solemn commemoration of Gold Star Families Remembrance Week, today Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) celebrated the passage of his bipartisan resolution recognizing the week of observance, which passed the Senate unanimously on Tuesday. Senator Warnock’s resolution, which designates Sept. 18-24, 2022 as Gold Star Families Remembrance Week, was co-led by U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS).

The resolution, which is supported by the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), provides the nation a specific time to honor the sacrifices made by families of U.S. military servicemembers who lost their lives in service to the nation.

“As the son of a veteran, my heart goes out to all of Georgia’s Gold Star families, and all the Gold Star families across our nation. Our nation is forever indebted to the brave men and women who laid it all on the line for our country, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms.  And for that, their families—who also sacrificed immensely—deserve recognition and our steadfast support as they work to navigate life without their loved one,” said Senator Reverend Warnock. “Our military has a strong and proud footprint in my home state of Georgia, which is why I am proud to have worked with Senator Hyde-Smith in passing this resolution to recognize Gold Star Families Remembrance Week and to remind every American of our solemn duty to honor and support the families of the servicemembers who sacrificed everything to keep our country safe.”

“We are a proud supporter of this resolution to designate a full week to honoring all of our nation’s Gold Star families,” said Bonnie Carrol, TAPS President and Founder.  “Memorial Day exists to honor the fallen, but Gold Star Families Remembrance Week provides the opportunity to honor surviving military families themselves.”

The Gold Star Families Remembrance Week resolution recognizes the loss and sacrifices of families in support of fallen members of the Armed Forces, as well as veterans.  It encourages Americans to perform acts of community service and goodwill to honor these families.

In 2021, Senators Warnock and Hyde-Smith teamed up to introduce a similar resolution honoring Gold Star families. A stalwart champion for Georgia’s veterans, military families and servicemembers, Senator Warnock recently helped to pass the PACT Act, the largest expansion of veteran’s health benefits in decades, and he previously worked to successfully pass his bill to study disparities in access to VA benefits, which is now signed into law. Senator Warnock has also recently introduced a legislative package to bolster affordable military housing for servicemembers and their families.
