Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed his Ocean Shipping Reform Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at improving shipping regulations to address potential price gouging, and lower rising costs that are negatively impacting Georgians. The bipartisan legislation, which passed the House Monday night 369-42, now heads to President Biden’s desk to get signed into law.
“I’m thrilled to see such widespread bipartisan support for my legislation that will ultimately help lower costs for Georgia’s consumers, small businesses, and farmers,” said Senator Reverend Warnock.“International shipping companies have been making record profits while Georgians have been paying record prices, so I’m focused on ensuring the federal government is doing everything in our power to protect hardworking Georgians, and their pockets, from corporate greed.”
Senator Reverend Warnock is an original cosponsor of the Ocean Shipping Reform Act, which passed the Senate unanimously in March, and has been a strong advocate both for holding ocean carriers accountable and easing supply chain issues. In February, Senator Warnock sent a letter to President Joe Biden urging the White House’s Supply Chain Disruption Task Force to investigate the apparent price gouging of ocean carriers, who have seemingly used the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse to increase profit margins. Additionally, in November, Senator Warnock successfully pushed the Biden Administration to loosen up $8 million in federal funding for the Georgia Ports Authority, which helped ease congestion at the Port of Savannah to eliminate economically-crushing supply chain kinks.
