Senator Reverend Warnock: “I’m happy to hear that the administration heeded my call to extend the pause on student loan payments”

Senator Reverend Warnock: “As wonderful as this news is, it is only a partial measure. Our children are leaving college owing the equivalent of a mortgage before they even own a home and have a mortgage. Cancelling student loan debt would lower people’s burdens and spur entrepreneurship”

In December, Senator Reverend Warnock successfully pushed the Administration to pause payments

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Reverend Warnock (D-GA) issued the following statement yesterday in response to media reports that President Biden was planning to extend the moratorium on federal student loan payments until September, which the President announced earlier today.

“I’m happy to hear that the administration heeded my call to extend the pause on student loan payments,” said Senator Reverend Warnock.“This is a much needed pause, as Georgia student loan borrowers still have a mountain to climb as we still face the dual economic and public health crises that are impacting our country.”

“As wonderful as this news is, it is only a partial measure”added Senator Warnock.“Our children are leaving college owing the equivalent of a mortgage before they even own a home and have a mortgage. Cancelling student loan debt would lower people’s burdens and spur entrepreneurship. We have to get this done.”

Additionally, today the Department of Education announced it will erase the defaults of all borrowers covered by the pandemic-related pause, which Senator Warnock has vocally pushed for.

Senator Warnock has been a vocal advocate for addressing burdensome student loan debt and was successful in pushing the Administration in December to extend a deferment for student loan borrowers as the nation continues to recover from the pressures of the pandemic.
